April 2025

Liquid hop products have become more popular the last couple of years. The intent is to produce similar beer while reducing the loss when using large quantities of hops. These losses can be more impactful on breweries when taking into account cost. Does it make sense on the homebrew level? Come and find out at our next meeting.

Monthly Meeting

April’s meeting will feature a comparison of two NEIPAs! While the recipes are theoretically identical, one is brewed using all T90 pellets and the other is brewed using liquid hop products. We will sample both beers, talk about liquid hop products and collect data for an upcoming article.

Looking forward to a fun and insightful session!

Big Brew Day

Join us for a club brew day as we celebrate the AHA’s 27th Annual Big Brew Day! We'll be brewing one of the AHA-selected recipes, so come ready to mash, boil, and bond over great beer. It’ll be a great time to meet members.

Bring a side dish to share! Terry will be firing up the grill with hamburgers or specialty sausages.

Our final brew of the day will be entered into a club-only competition hosted by the Weiz Guys!

Come for the brewing, stay for the fun—see you there

LFC Discord

We started using a new collaboration tool (Discord) for members to more easily collaborate with the LFC Barrel Project. However, we also wanted to extend the invite for all LFC members to our discord server. This will provide a way to more easily communicate with other club members! We hope to see you there. Canning Starter Wort

Making yeast starters ensures a healthy, viable pitch, but it adds another step to brewing. To simplify, I make my own starter wort and can it—store-bought versions are pricey! Now, when I need a starter, I just sanitize my container, add the wort and water to 1000 ml, and pitch the yeast.

For canning, follow proper guidelines to prevent contamination, including Botulism. Don’t let that scare you—here’s my quick process:

That’s it! I’ll make 12 jars in around a couple hours (including 2 rounds with my pressure canner). This method makes yeast starters effortless.

DME can also be expensive, so if you have room in your mash tun, you could increase the volume of your next brew day and use some of that wort (before adding hops), you may need to water it down when making the yeast starter or before canning it. Ideally a yeast start should be 1.030-1.040 SG
